how to write relatable characters

Have you ever sat down and wondered why the most common form of entertainment is a world where for the vast majority of people, the form of people interment is through the lives of other people's views?  Why are so many people so engrossed in worlds that are not even real?  That is the question I want  to answer and how to create characters that will feel just as real as the people you see the people around you.
